Cherryland Electric Cooperative recently awarded $14,5000 in grants to five Grand Traverse area non-profits through our Cherryland Cares program. Each month, when members choose to round up their electric bill to the nearest dollar, that money is placed into the Cherryland Cares fund. A group of volunteer members then review grant applications from local nonprofits and allocate funds to the organizations seeking assistance. Since it’s an all-volunteer board, 100% of the money donated goes right back into the community. It’s our way of lending a hand to northern Michigan nonprofits doing good work in our local communities.
Receiving the grants this September were the Northwest Michigan Community Action Council, Salvation Army, TART Trails Recycle-A-Bicycle, Grow Benzie, Inc. and Friends of the Interlochen Library. Over the past five years the Cherryland Cares board has granted nearly $250,000 to area non-profits.
Does Cherryland do a seedling/tree giveaway at any time during the year, i.e. similar to TC Light and Power? A lot trees were lost in the storm and we need to start replanting some areas.
Hi Carla, we don’t do seedling/tree giveaways regularly but we have in the past. This is a great idea due to the recent storm damage and something we are going to discuss for doing again soon. Thank you!
